The Nanny Who Vanished

Chapter 03 - The Nanny Who Vanished

By midnight, the restaurant had emptied and the broken dishes were swept away. Marco wanted to put the incident behind him. Victor would not let the night become a story about an expensive tantrum. He asked an independent child-welfare professional to guide him on next steps, arranged medical attention for Matthew's injured wrist, and took his son to the apartment of a trusted family friend rather than to the townhouse Raymond controlled.

Hannah expected her shift to end with dismissal. Instead, Victor asked for her contact details and thanked her with an awkwardness that almost made him seem ordinary. She declined the envelope his assistant offered. 'Pay me for the hours I worked,' she said. 'Matthew doesn't owe me a reward for being frightened.' Victor looked at the untouched envelope for a moment. 'Then tell me how I can help.' 'Listen to him,' she answered. 'Without making him prove his pain to you.'

The following morning, Victor contacted Rosa Alvarez's old phone number. It rang to a disconnected message. Her sister in Queens said Rosa had not called in weeks, and that a man claiming to represent the Davis family told her not to ask questions. Victor felt the first cold certainty that the restaurant incident was part of something larger. He had assumed Rosa left because the wages were too low. Raymond had told him she was unreliable. He had never investigated.

Hannah returned to her mother's small apartment in Astoria after a night without sleep. Her mother, Denise, sat beneath a quilt beside a humming oxygen concentrator. She knew immediately something had happened. Hannah described the frightened boy but left out Victor's criminal reputation. Denise listened, then asked, 'Did you remember to eat?' Hannah laughed and began to cry instead. She felt ashamed that she had taken the cake to a wealthy child while her own mother sometimes skipped meals to save money.

Denise squeezed her hand. 'Kindness isn't a loaf of bread that runs out when you share it.' She had spent thirty years as a public school nurse and knew how to spot pain people had learned to conceal. 'But be careful, baby. Powerful men often confuse gratitude with ownership.' Hannah promised to be careful, although she wondered how anyone could be safe after hearing Matthew mention a missing nanny and a room that should not exist.

That afternoon Victor's investigator found Rosa's storage unit in the Bronx. It had not been accessed since her disappearance. The police were informed, and her sister helped with lawful access to personal records. Inside were children's books, receipts for Matthew's medicine, and an envelope addressed to Victor that had never been mailed. Rosa had written that Raymond was administering punishments behind locked doors, that the child was terrified of his mother's bedroom, and that she intended to report it. Her final paragraph read: 'If I disappear, look in the old ferry warehouse. Ask why your brother has the only key.'

Victor had once inherited that warehouse from his father. He believed it was empty. The key, he discovered, had been transferred to Raymond months earlier through a company Victor barely remembered signing. His attorney told him to give Rosa's letter to investigators rather than raid the building. Victor's first instinct was to bring armed men. He stood with his fists tight, remembering the blank look on Matthew's face at dinner.

Then he imagined Hannah saying, 'Don't make him afraid of you too.' He put the phone away. This time he would not solve the problem by making people fear his name. He would find Rosa alive if he could, gather evidence, and let the truth survive beyond his own anger.

Before bed Matthew asked for cake. Victor brought him a small slice and sat beside him without telling him to finish it. Halfway through, the boy murmured, 'Rosa said she'd come back.' Victor kissed his hair. 'I'm going to look for her.' Matthew's expression sharpened. 'Then don't let Uncle Raymond know you're coming.'
