The Hearing

Chapter 15 - The Hearing

When Raymond's case reached a major hearing, the courthouse was packed. Reporters waited on the steps. The evidence included financial records, testimony from witnesses, and authenticated portions of the video files. Matthew's welfare remained subject to protective arrangements, and professionals worked to minimize his exposure to adversarial proceedings. Victor refused requests to parade his son before cameras.

Rosa testified about what she had observed and the threats made against her. Her voice shook when she described trying to keep Matthew safe. The defense questioned her memory of some events after her medical emergency. She acknowledged what she did not know and repeated what she could support. Hannah watched from the back and felt admiration for a woman who was willing to say 'I don't remember' rather than invent certainty.

Marco testified about the restaurant scene. He admitted that he had initially ignored signs of the boy's distress because the family frightened him. He described Hannah approaching with cake and the child asking whether he would be punished for telling the truth. Afterward he sought Hannah in the hallway. 'I should've helped,' he said. Hannah answered, 'Next time, help.' He nodded.

Victor also testified about the oversight he had surrendered to Raymond. His attorneys had advised him to distinguish what he knew personally from what he'd assumed. He did. When asked why he had not noticed Matthew's fear sooner, he said, 'Because I thought paying for his care meant I was caring for him.' The answer sounded terrible in the silent courtroom. He didn't attempt to improve it.

Hannah did not become a celebrity witness. She described the restaurant incident in precise terms: the broken glass, the terrified boy, the lowered vase, and the question about the black room. She was clear that she could not know what occurred before that evening. She had no need to embellish. The truth was enough.

The proceedings continued beyond that day, and not every allegation was resolved at once. But Raymond's control of the household and related business entities was restricted through separate legal and corporate actions. Victor began the difficult work of disentangling his companies from operations that had flourished under his willingness not to ask questions.

Outside, a reporter shouted, 'Mr. Davis, will your son ever forgive his uncle?' Victor stopped. Hannah feared he'd answer in anger. Instead he said, 'My son owes nobody forgiveness. He deserves privacy and a safe childhood.' Then he walked away without another word.

That night Matthew asked whether he was going to jail because he'd broken the restaurant. Victor knelt before him. 'No. You were frightened, and the adults should have helped you.' Matthew looked skeptical. 'But I broke expensive stuff.' Victor nodded. 'We can still make things right when we damage property. That doesn't mean you deserved to be scared or hurt.' Matthew thought about the distinction and asked whether he could write an apology to the restaurant staff. Victor said yes, if he wanted to.

They made cards together. One said, 'I'm sorry your glass broke.' Another said, 'Thank you for not hurting me.' Matthew drew a slice of cake beside Hannah's name. Victor watched him carefully shape the letters. The cards could not repair the past, but they were chosen freely, and that made them different from every apology Raymond had ever demanded.
