The Arrest at the Old Club

Chapter 11 - The Arrest at the Old Club

Raymond was arrested outside a private club in Manhattan on charges arising from the investigation, including alleged witness intimidation and financial offenses. The child-welfare matters were addressed through separate proceedings and protective measures. He pleaded not guilty. News cameras crowded the sidewalk, and commentators turned the Davis family into a spectacle. Victor did not celebrate. He had loved his brother once, and the discovery of what Raymond might have done carried grief alongside rage.

The first call Victor made was to Dr. Ortiz. He asked how to explain the arrest to Matthew without frightening him. She advised simple, truthful language and reassurance that adults were taking responsibility for safety. At breakfast Victor told the boy, 'Uncle Raymond is being held while grown-ups investigate serious things. You are not in trouble, and none of this happened because you talked.'

Matthew pushed cereal around his bowl. 'Will he come back?' 'Not to this house.' 'Even if he says sorry?' Victor paused. 'Saying sorry doesn't mean someone gets to come close and hurt you again.' Matthew considered this, then asked for more strawberries. Victor recognized the ordinary request as a victory.

Hannah saw the arrest on a newsstand television while buying coffee. Her first feeling was relief. The second was dread that a trial would force Matthew into the center of attention. She called Victor, not to ask for details but to remind him that the child needed privacy. 'I know,' he said. 'I'm learning.' She believed him more than she expected to.

Marco contacted Hannah with an apology. He admitted he'd known Raymond disliked Rosa and that staff had heard disturbing rumors. He'd told himself it was none of his business. 'I was protecting my job,' he confessed. Hannah was quiet. 'I understand being scared,' she answered. 'I don't understand making a child face it alone.' Marco said nothing. She hoped he would remember that silence the next time somebody needed help.

Victor's holding company began auditing suppliers and reviewing labor practices. Investigators had warned him that some operations under his name were entangled with illegal activity. For years he'd accepted the profit while claiming ignorance of the details. Now he faced choices with real costs: separating legitimate companies from compromised partners, reporting wrongdoing, and risking both fortune and reputation. He instructed his attorneys to cooperate within the law and stopped authorizing business through Raymond's network.

He also replaced the ornate dining table in his house. It had been Elena's favorite, but Matthew avoided sitting there because it reminded him of being ordered to eat. Victor moved meals to the sunny breakfast nook. The table was small enough that father and son could reach the same basket of bread without calling a servant.

One evening Matthew asked whether Hannah could visit for his birthday. Victor said he would ask, and that she could say no. Matthew looked startled. 'Even to us?' 'Even to us,' Victor said. His son smiled. The next morning the boy drew a birthday invitation featuring a chocolate cake and a handwritten line: 'You don't have to come if you're tired.' Hannah cried when she received it.
