The Birthday Nobody Had to Earn

Chapter 12 - The Birthday Nobody Had to Earn

Matthew turned seven on a rainy Tuesday. In previous years Raymond had arranged enormous parties with entertainers, custom cakes, and photographs staged for donors. This year Matthew requested six people, a small chocolate cake, and no one in suits. Victor promised all three. The guest list included Rosa, Hannah, Denise, Dr. Ortiz for a brief greeting, and Victor's longtime cook, Mrs. Bell.

Hannah arrived with a wrapped box containing a children's cookbook and a wooden spoon engraved with Matthew's initials. She worried that it looked ridiculous beside the wealth of the Davis household. Matthew tore the paper and gasped. 'We can make things?' 'You can learn to make things,' she corrected. 'The first few might be messy.' He grinned. 'Good.'

Denise sat near the window with a blanket over her knees. Victor personally carried her tea. He asked about her years as a nurse, and for the first time in months he listened to someone speak without checking his phone. Denise told stories of children who had recovered confidence because one adult had taken time to explain what was happening. She did not flatter him. When he asked whether he was doing enough, she said, 'Enough isn't a fixed number. Show up tomorrow.'

Rosa cried when Matthew ran into her arms. She had recovered enough to return to part-time childcare work elsewhere, though she still feared the legal proceedings. She told Victor she would testify to what she knew. He thanked her, but she corrected him: 'I am doing this for Matthew, not for you.' He nodded. She was right.

At cake time Victor lit seven candles. Matthew stared at the flame, looking tense. Hannah asked whether he wanted everyone to sing. He shook his head. 'Not loud.' Victor turned to the guests. 'Softly, then.' The song was barely above a whisper. Matthew listened, smiled, and blew out the candles. Nobody demanded a photograph before he was ready.

After dessert, Matthew spilled a glass of juice. Everyone froze for a fraction of a second, remembering the restaurant. The boy looked at the spreading red liquid, his face whitening. Victor reached for a towel. 'Well,' he said, 'the table was thirsty.' Matthew blinked. Then laughed. Hannah laughed with him. Rosa pressed a napkin to her eyes.

Later Matthew sat beside Hannah on the carpet. 'Do you know what I wished?' he asked. She shook her head. 'That everybody who comes to my birthday wants to be here.' Hannah's eyes filled. She wanted to tell him that he would never again be abandoned. Instead she told him the truth. 'Everyone here chose to come because they care about you.' Matthew leaned against her shoulder. That was enough.

Victor watched from the doorway. He felt gratitude, but also something more complicated. Hannah's courage had changed the way he looked at his family. He admired her steadiness. Yet he remembered Denise's warning about men who confused gratitude with ownership. He would not reward Hannah's kindness by trying to claim her time or affection. He would ask, listen, and accept whatever answer she gave.

The party ended before sunset. Matthew carried his cookbook to bed. Victor kissed his forehead and asked what his favorite part had been. 'When I spilled the juice,' Matthew said. Victor frowned. 'Why?' The boy smiled sleepily. 'Because nobody got mad.'
