The Price of Silence

Chapter 11 - The Price of Silence

Vanessa's legal team responded aggressively. They denied every allegation of deliberate harm, challenged the reliability of staff witnesses, and alleged that Salvatore was using his influence to punish a wife after a domestic dispute. A family court addressed temporary safety arrangements while investigators examined the staircase incident. Neither side could simply declare the outcome.

Salvatore's first instinct was to retaliate. Matteo offered to “make the problem disappear.” Salvatore dismissed him from the meeting.

“That's how we got here,” he said. “People afraid to tell the truth because powerful men think fear solves everything.”

The statement surprised everyone, including Salvatore.

Meanwhile Nicholas began having nightmares about the staircase. Dr. Hale advised that any investigative interview should be handled by trained specialists. Salvatore did not ask leading questions. He listened when Nicholas volunteered ordinary memories and stayed beside him through the difficult nights.

One night the boy woke crying, “Don't push!” Salvatore switched on the bedside lamp, leaving the door open so Nicholas could see the hallway. “You're in our new house. I'm here.”

Nicholas clung to his sleeve. “Will she come?”

“Not tonight. There are safety rules keeping her away, and the grown-ups responsible are helping us.”

“Did I make trouble?”

“No. Someone hurt you. You didn't cause that.”

Nicholas looked at his cast. “I miss being fast.”

“We'll find things you can do while it heals.”

The next day they bought a toy car track that fitted on the dining table. Salvatore canceled a board meeting to assemble it. One director complained. Salvatore answered, “My son needs me.” No apology followed.

Claire called that afternoon. A review of estate accounts had identified payments to a trust administered by Kroll. They could not yet establish the final beneficiary, but the transactions appeared designed to conceal ownership. The trust's name was *Northstar Child Services*. Salvatore stared at it: Elena had created a genuine childhood education fund under a nearly identical name. Someone might have used the charitable mission as camouflage.
