A House With Open Doors

Chapter 19 - A House With Open Doors
A year after the fall, Salvatore sold the original estate. The decision surprised everyone. The mansion had belonged to the Vance family for generations, and its marble staircase had appeared in magazines as a symbol of success. Nicholas had asked never to return there. Salvatore understood that a child shouldn't have to live inside the scene of his worst memory to preserve a family image.
Their new home stood near a park, with ordinary wooden stairs and a kitchen large enough for Rosa's friends to crowd around the table. The doors had simple locks for privacy and safety, but no room was used as punishment. Nicholas chose yellow curtains for his bedroom and a blue shelf for his trains.
On moving day he carried Elena's framed photograph upstairs himself. Salvatore followed, ready to help but careful not to take over.
At the landing Nicholas paused. He looked down the steps. His breathing quickened. Salvatore waited quietly.
“I remember falling,” the boy said.
“I know.”
“Sometimes I think it will happen again.”
“We can go slowly. And we can practice with Dr. Hale if you want.”
Nicholas considered the stairs. Then took his father's hand. They climbed together, one step at a time.
That night the house filled with the smell of roast chicken. Rosa told a story about Elena burning her first Thanksgiving pie. Nicholas laughed so hard he spilled water across the table. Everyone helped wipe it up. No one went silent. No one looked afraid.
Later, from his bedroom doorway, Nicholas called, “Daddy, are you coming to read?”

Salvatore closed his laptop. “Already on my way.”
The unfinished email could wait. The little boy could not.
