A Different Vance Empire

Chapter 17 - A Different Vance Empire
The financial investigation prompted Salvatore to examine more than foundation records. He commissioned independent reviews of the legitimate businesses and severed relationships with associates whose methods depended on intimidation. The changes were expensive and difficult. Several men warned that he was becoming weak.
Salvatore thought of Nicholas lying beneath the chandelier. “If strength means a child cannot tell me he's afraid,” he replied, “I want something different.”
He began delegating daily operations to executives whose authority came with documented accountability. Certain ventures were sold; others faced compliance reforms. He couldn't erase his past through a speech, and he did not pretend otherwise. But he could stop asking the next generation to inherit the same habits.
At home he created a small scholarship fund in Elena's name using independently audited resources. The foundation's board included teachers, child advocates, and financial professionals who were not beholden to the Vance family. Every year its results would be public.
Nicholas helped choose the fund's symbol: a small red train. “Because trains keep going,” he explained.
At the first event, Salvatore stood beside a photograph of Elena and spoke about her concern for children who had been overlooked. He did not turn her memory into a fairy tale. He acknowledged that he'd failed to listen when she raised questions about the foundation.
Afterward Nicholas tugged his sleeve. “Was Mommy proud of me?”
“She would have loved your drawing.”
“Are you proud of me?”

Salvatore knelt. “Every day. Not because you won anything. Because you're you.”
Nicholas considered that, then hugged him. Salvatore held him until the boy was ready to let go.
