The Verdict No One Could Buy

Chapter 15 - The Verdict No One Could Buy

The court proceedings concerning Nicholas's injuries moved slowly. Medical documentation, witness testimony, photographs, and records were examined. Salvatore gave his account of seeing Vanessa push the boy. He answered questions about his own absence and his household's culture of fear without trying to make himself look blameless.

“I believed hiring security meant providing safety,” he said. “I was wrong.”

The judge considered the evidence under the applicable standards, separate from the ongoing financial inquiry. Nicholas did not have to perform his trauma for an audience; appropriate professionals handled the information relating to his experiences.

Eventually Vanessa accepted a plea agreement concerning the assault and unlawful confinement allegations, subject to the court's approval. The sentence included supervision, treatment requirements, and restrictions designed to protect Nicholas. The financial misconduct investigation remained ongoing, and no criminal determination had established that Elena's death was intentional.

There was no sudden cheer outside the courthouse. Salvatore felt relief, grief, anger, and fatigue all at once. Nicholas was safe, but legal outcomes couldn't restore his childhood overnight.

Rosa met him near the steps. “How is the little one?”

“Building a spaceship out of cardboard.”

She smiled. “Then let's not keep him waiting.”

Salvatore looked once toward the courthouse doors. He had spent years believing justice meant crushing an opponent. Now he understood it meant protecting the vulnerable, establishing facts, and respecting processes that even he couldn't command.

They drove home without a motorcade. Nicholas met them at the door wearing a paper helmet.

“Daddy, you have to come to Mars!”

Salvatore set down his coat. “Is it urgent?”

“Very!”

“Then Mars it is.”

He crawled into the cardboard spaceship. Nicholas closed the flap behind him, laughing. For once, Salvatore wasn't late to the most important appointment of his day.
