The Last Secret in the Blue Folder

Chapter 18 - The Last Secret in the Blue Folder
The final analysis of Elena's blue folder explained the original financial scheme with far greater clarity. It contained records of consulting payments, communications among advisers, and notes showing Elena had planned to report irregularities. Some evidence supported civil recovery claims. Other allegations could not be established beyond doubt.
A renewed review of the car crash uncovered administrative failures in how leads had been pursued but did not conclusively establish criminal sabotage. Salvatore accepted the painful uncertainty. He would not tell Nicholas his mother had been murdered when the evidence did not prove it.
The strongest remaining revelation was personal. Tucked into the back of the folder was an unsent letter Elena had written to her son:
*My Nicholas, you are too small to read this now. Someday you may hear people say that Vance men never show fear. Please don't believe them. Your father is brave when he protects someone weaker than himself, but even he needs people who tell him the truth. You can cry. You can make mistakes. You can ask for help. None of those things make you less loved.*
Salvatore read the letter aloud one afternoon while Nicholas sat beside him. The boy listened carefully, then asked to hear it again.
When Salvatore finished, Nicholas touched the page. “Mommy knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I could be scared.”
Salvatore nodded. “Yes.”
“Did she know you could be scared too?”

He thought of the hospital, the staircase, and four years of grief. “I think she understood that better than anyone.”
Nicholas rested his head against his father's shoulder. They sat together as afternoon sunlight moved across the paper, two people who had been separated by silence learning to remember Elena through love instead of fear.
