The Charity Built From Lies

Chapter 12 - The Charity Built From Lies
The Northstar accounts revealed a maze of consulting invoices and related-party transactions. Some money reached legitimate projects. Other funds were routed to private investments controlled by intermediaries connected to Mercer and Kroll. Independent accountants documented suspicious payments and referred their findings to appropriate authorities.
Salvatore didn't celebrate. Money could be recovered, perhaps, but children who had been denied grants couldn't recover the lost opportunities so easily. He arranged to fund the interrupted scholarship commitments from undisputed assets, with oversight independent of his family.
At a meeting of the remaining foundation trustees, an elderly teacher stood and asked, “Why should we trust another Vance?”
The room went quiet. Once Salvatore might have taken offense. Now he answered, “You shouldn't trust my name. You should trust transparent records and people empowered to challenge me.”
The trustees began discussing stronger governance. Salvatore listened more than he spoke.
That evening Rosa told him about the last ordinary day she remembered with Elena. They had baked cinnamon rolls. Nicholas, then two, sat on the floor tapping a wooden spoon against a pan. Elena laughed so hard she spilled flour across her dress.
“She was happy here once,” Rosa said.
Salvatore nodded. “I keep thinking about what I should have done.”
Rosa considered him. “Then do something different now.”

They found Elena's handwritten recipe and baked the rolls for Nicholas. Their first batch came out crooked and slightly burned. Nicholas inspected one and declared it “a dinosaur roll.” Salvatore laughed until his eyes watered. For a moment the past wasn't only grief. It was a story they could share.
A message arrived from Claire during cleanup. Kroll had agreed to cooperate with an inquiry into the foundation transactions. He maintained he hadn't known about the child abuse. His testimony could clarify Vanessa's financial role and possibly Elena's final days. Salvatore placed the phone face down. The next ten minutes belonged to Nicholas and his dinosaur-shaped cinnamon roll.
