A Photograph From Before the Funeral

Chapter 04 - A Photograph From Before the Funeral
The photograph lay inside a book of botanical drawings that Rosa had loaned to a friend. It showed Elena at a charity dinner, four months before her death, standing beside a brunette woman in a burgundy dress. The woman's hair was different, but the narrow eyes and distinctive scar near her collarbone belonged unmistakably to Vanessa.
Salvatore stared. “She told me she'd never met Elena.”
Rosa nodded. “Elena introduced her as a consultant. They argued about the foundation accounts the week after this picture.”
Beside Vanessa stood a man Salvatore recognized: Julian Mercer, a financial adviser who had vanished from his circle after Elena's accident. Mercer had later returned as an executive working for one of Salvatore's overseas partners. He had recommended Vanessa for a philanthropic board seat, claiming she was an old friend from Boston.
The accidental meeting through which Salvatore had supposedly met Vanessa now appeared staged.
That afternoon attorney Claire Donovan obtained the foundation ledgers and initiated an independent audit. She warned him to avoid making accusations beyond what they could prove. A photograph could establish acquaintance, not murder. An unusual transfer could indicate misconduct, not necessarily a conspiracy. Salvatore accepted the distinction, however much he wanted a simpler answer.
At the estate, investigators documented the staircase and the locked linen room. Salvatore did not enter the house. Nicholas had asked him not to go back without him, and he would not return there until it was safe.
In the evening Vanessa called. “Your lawyers are making a spectacle,” she said.
“My son is in the hospital.”
“He's always been dramatic.”
“He's six.”
“You've spent years away. You don't know what he's like.”
Salvatore looked through the hospital window. Nicholas was asleep with Rosa reading quietly beside him.
“I know what I saw,” he said. “All further communication goes through counsel.”
Vanessa's voice changed. “You can't keep him from me.”

“His safety will be determined lawfully, not through threats.”
He ended the call. Dante immediately forwarded a record showing Vanessa's access badge had opened the camera control room minutes before Nicholas fell. Salvatore passed it to investigators. He had once measured loyalty by who obeyed him without question; now he measured integrity by who was willing to tell him an unwelcome truth.
