Vanessa's Version

Chapter 14 - Vanessa's Version
Vanessa requested an opportunity to provide her account through her lawyer. Investigators questioned her about the staircase, the disabled camera, the locked room, and the disputed foundation accounts. She maintained that Nicholas had slipped while struggling against her instruction to slow down. Yet Salvatore's eyewitness account, the child's injuries, and access logs raised serious inconsistencies.
When confronted with the room without a clock, she called it “a calming space.” Photographs showed a lock on the outside of the door. Rosa and other staff described occasions when Nicholas was confined there alone. Vanessa denied prolonged confinement.
Salvatore read the summary and felt fury burn behind his eyes. Then he looked at a photograph of Nicholas drawing at the kitchen table and set the papers aside. A child needed his father steadier than that.
Later, in a supervised legal setting, Vanessa asked to speak with Salvatore. Her elegant composure had begun to fray.
“You've destroyed everything,” she said.
“No,” Salvatore answered. “You hurt Nicholas. The investigation will decide the facts beyond that.”
“You always chose work over home.”
He didn't deny it. “I did. I was absent. That was my failure, and I'm changing it.”
Vanessa leaned forward. “Then why am I the only one being punished?”
“Because my absence didn't put your hands on his shoulders.”
Her mouth tightened. For a moment he wondered whether she would express remorse. Instead she said, “He was impossible to manage.”
Salvatore stood. “He's a child.”

He ended the meeting. He didn't need to win the exchange. He needed to stop participating in a world where the person with the loudest accusation controlled the truth.
That evening Nicholas lost a board game and burst into tears. Salvatore sat beside him, let him cry, and asked whether he wanted another round. Nicholas nodded. They played again. It was the kind of ordinary repair that had never happened under Vanessa's rules.
