The Wedding Dress Was Never Evidence of Theft

Chapter 11 - The Wedding Dress Was Never Evidence of Theft
A textile specialist examined the wedding dress to help preserve it, and found a small pocket sewn into the lining. Inside was a memory card wrapped in waxed paper. Rose had hidden it where only someone willing to protect the dress would look.
The card contained recordings from her phone: conversations about questionable foundation payments, photographs of account summaries, and a voice memo made shortly before she went into labor.
Rose's voice filled Adrian's study.
*If you're hearing this, please understand that I'm frightened. Vanessa wants me to sign papers I haven't read. She says the baby will be safer elsewhere. I don't believe her. I need Adrian to know about the transfers. And I need him to stop pretending that the world he built can't reach our child.*
Adrian sat motionless.
There was no miraculous message absolving him. Rose's words contained love and anger, hope and fear. She had wanted him to know, and she had wanted him to change.
The files strengthened the investigation into forged records and suspicious transactions. But Adrian treasured something else: one ordinary fifteen-second recording of Rose singing badly to a song on the radio while laughing at herself.
He replayed it once, then turned off the computer.

"I'm sorry I didn't listen when you were here," he whispered.
The dress would be cleaned and preserved. One day, if Lily wanted, she could see it and hear about the woman who wore it.
