Chapter 17 - Vanessa Before the Judge
The investigations concluded in stages. Vanessa faced charges relating to forged documents and financial misconduct, and prosecutors addressed the evidence through ordinary court proceedings. She continued disputing some allegations while accepting responsibility for others under a negotiated resolution approved by the court.
Adrian attended one hearing but declined to turn it into a public spectacle. He gave a factual statement and let the court decide the consequences. Emma did the same. Neither wanted Lily or June growing up with their private history replayed for entertainment.
Outside the courthouse, Vanessa approached from across the corridor under the watch of her attorney.
"You chose a maid over me," she said bitterly.
Adrian looked at her. "I chose to listen to evidence you tried to keep from me."
She glanced toward Emma. "And now you think you're a good man?"
He did not answer immediately. "No. I think I have work to do."
Emma stood beside the elevator holding June's stroller. She wasn't there to hear Vanessa apologize. She was there because she had told the truth and wanted the legal record to reflect it.

As the doors opened, Adrian let Emma go first.
The simple gesture would once have seemed beneath his notice. Now he understood that dignity lived in such moments.
