The Nurse Who Remembered Two Birth Certificates

Chapter 05 - The Nurse Who Remembered Two Birth Certificates

Miriam Alvarez answered her door with a walking cane in one hand and a gardening glove in the other. She looked past Adrian toward the parked cars, her expression cautious.

"I wondered when someone would come," she said.

Adrian introduced his attorney, who explained the purpose of their visit. Miriam agreed to talk after confirming that Emma was safe.

They sat around a kitchen table covered in seed catalogs. Miriam had retired from nursing, but the way she arranged tea and checked that everyone had a chair suggested she still thought first about other people's comfort.

"Rose didn't miscarry," she said finally.

Adrian's hands clenched beneath the table.

"She gave birth early, following complications. The baby was small and needed specialized care. But she was alive. A daughter."

"My daughter?"

Miriam nodded. "Rose named her Lily."

Adrian lowered his head. The name hit him like a memory he had somehow been denied. Rose had once said that if they had a girl, she wanted something gentle and simple, like a flower that came back each spring.

Miriam described a chaotic transfer between facilities, confusing paperwork, and a woman from Bellwether claiming to act on the family's behalf. "Rose wanted you called immediately. She kept saying you'd come. But her phone was missing, and every message I passed along came back undelivered."

"Was Vanessa involved?"

"I saw her in the corridor talking to the placement representative. I can't tell you what they agreed on."

"Where was Lily taken?"

Miriam's face tightened. "I was told she would be moved to a specialty unit. Later, I discovered the hospital transfer record didn't match the discharge papers. I reported the discrepancy. By then, the people involved had left."

Adrian resisted the urge to demand more than she knew. Instead he asked whether she would give a formal statement.

"Yes," Miriam answered. "I've waited three years for someone to care enough to ask properly."

As they left, she handed him a small knitted cap, blue with a white star. "Rose made this herself. The baby never got to wear it."

Adrian held it in both palms. For the first time since the funeral, he cried in front of another person.
