The Woman Who Sold a Family's Silence

Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Sold a Family's Silence
Dominic Vale, Vanessa's cousin, agreed to an interview through counsel after investigators traced irregular transfers to his company. His statements were self-serving, but they provided leads that could be checked against records.
He claimed Vanessa had been involved in arranging Lily's placement and that Bellwether had been paid to prepare false documentation. He also alleged that she diverted money through the family foundation while Adrian was distracted by Rose's death.
Vanessa denied these claims. Investigators compared accounts, signatures, messages, and dates rather than simply choosing whichever witness sounded convincing.
Emma was called to provide a statement about the confrontation in the mansion. She described being grabbed by her wrist, threatened with dismissal, and told she would be accused of theft if she refused to hand over Rose's belongings.
Adrian watched her leave the interview room. "You shouldn't have had to face that alone."
Emma stopped. "I didn't need you to save me. I needed you not to believe the lie."
"I know."
"Do you?"

He met her eyes. "I think I'm finally beginning to."
It was the closest thing to reconciliation she was ready to offer. He accepted it without reaching for more.
