A Name on the Birth Certificate

Chapter 13 - A Name on the Birth Certificate

The court process confirmed that Adrian was Lily's biological father and that documents used in her adoption had contained material misrepresentations. The judge emphasized that the child's best interests required thoughtful planning, not a contest between adults.

The Fosters had provided a loving home. Adrian had lost the opportunity to parent through deception. Lily deserved relationships with people who cared about her, not another traumatic separation.

A gradual contact plan continued while professionals assessed her needs. Adrian attended parenting classes and met regularly with a counselor. He learned how to follow Lily's pace, and how not to take a child's hesitation as rejection.

Meanwhile, the legal inquiry into Rose's death remained unresolved. Her medical complications were real. Investigators examined whether delays and false instructions had interfered with communication or treatment, but Adrian refused to tell himself that every tragedy must have been planned. He had spent too long living among men who invented certainty when evidence was missing.

One afternoon Lily handed him a picture she'd drawn. A rabbit stood beside three stick figures and a yellow sun.

"That's Mommy Rebecca, Daddy James, and you," she explained.

Adrian looked down at the paper. "There's room for everybody?"

She nodded. "And Bunny."

He smiled through tears. "Especially Bunny."
