The House Without Locked Doors

Chapter 16 - The House Without Locked Doors
Adrian eventually sold the old mansion. It carried too many reminders of control, secrecy, and silence. Before the sale, he walked through the nursery one last time and packed Rose's keepsakes himself.
He moved to a smaller house with windows that opened toward a garden and rooms designed around ordinary visits instead of formal entertaining. Lily helped choose the color of a guest-room wall. She selected pale yellow because, she said, rabbits liked sunshine.
His transition away from illegal business remained difficult. Not every partner welcomed change, and legal consequences did not disappear merely because Adrian wanted a different life. He worked through counsel and allowed legitimate managers to oversee the lawful parts of his company while he addressed old obligations.
Daniel, who had served him through years of darker decisions, asked whether he regretted losing influence.
Adrian considered the question. "I regret what I thought influence was for."
That evening he set Rose's framed photograph on a shelf beside Lily's drawing and the small knitted cap Miriam had kept.
