The First Honest Dinner

Chapter 15 - The First Honest Dinner

A month later, Adrian invited Emma, June, the Fosters, and Lily to an early dinner at a rented lakeside home. The gathering was modest, with ordinary food and no bodyguards at the table. Everyone could leave whenever they wished.

Lily brought a picture book. Emma brought lemon bars. Rebecca brought a container of pasta salad because she believed hosts were always too optimistic about portions. James helped Adrian assemble a high chair borrowed for June.

Lily studied the baby solemnly. "She's tiny."

"You were tiny once," Rebecca said.

"I was never that tiny."

Everyone laughed.

Adrian watched Emma rock June and wondered how Rose would have described such a scene. Complicated, certainly. Beautiful too.

After dinner, Rebecca approached him beside the kitchen window. "I was angry when you first appeared. I was afraid Lily would be taken away and forget us."

"I was afraid she'd never know me."

Rebecca nodded. "I think we're learning there's enough love without making her choose."

Adrian looked toward the yard, where Lily was showing James a dandelion she'd found.

"I hope so."
