The Blue Door Opens

Chapter 10 - The Blue Door Opens
The blue room stood at the far end of the Moretti family estate, beneath a sloping roof and above an unused guest wing. Adrian had not entered it since childhood.
On a gray Saturday, he visited with his attorney, the estate caretaker, and a child-safety specialist. Lucia stayed elsewhere with a trusted relative, spared another frightening confrontation.
The room was small and sparsely furnished. A narrow daybed stood against one wall. The windows opened only a few inches. The door had a lock fitted on the outside, but the team did not assume it had been used until its history could be established.
In a cabinet they found a box of Lucia's drawings and several children's books. On the wall hung a handwritten list: NO CRYING AT DINNER. NO QUESTIONS ABOUT ELENA. NO PHONE CALLS WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Adrian read the words twice.
He remembered Vincent assuring him that structure was helping Lucia adjust to grief. In reality, someone had built a system in which a child was punished for missing her mother.
The caretaker, Mrs. Alvarez, began crying. She had worked at the estate for eighteen years. Vincent had threatened to dismiss her when she questioned the rules. She had once tried to reach Adrian, but a message never arrived.
“I should've found another way,” she whispered.
Adrian took a breath. “Please tell the investigators what you know. You won't be punished for it.”
He offered that guarantee in writing and arranged independent interviews for staff who wanted to speak. He also asked the child-safety specialist to document the room and preserve the list, leaving decisions about legal consequences to the appropriate authorities.
That evening Hannah stopped by the Moretti residence to return a picture Lucia had left at Bellini's. Adrian showed her none of the photographs from the blue room. He didn't want to make the girl's experiences into material for adults to pass around.
Instead he asked, “Would you sit with us for dinner?”
Hannah hesitated. “I don't want her to think I'll always be here.”
“Then we'll tell her the truth about what tonight means.”
Lucia greeted Hannah with a delighted squeal, then asked whether she was leaving after dessert.
May you like
“Yes,” Hannah answered gently. “But I can visit again.”
Lucia considered it and nodded. Trust, they were learning, began with promises small enough to keep.
