The Numbers Elena Hid

Chapter 08 - The Numbers Elena Hid
The memory card held spreadsheets, emails, and a short video of Elena speaking directly to the camera. Adrian watched it once, then asked Miriam to preserve the original and arrange an independent forensic review.
In the recording, Elena looked exhausted but determined.
“I don't know what this means yet,” she said. “But money from our freight accounts is leaving without clear records of services performed. I am worried about what Vincent is doing, and I am worried that Adrian will think I'm accusing his family without proof.”
She paused, brushing her hair behind one ear.
“If something happens, don't let Lucia become a pawn in this.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
He remembered their final argument. Elena had wanted him to postpone a business trip and examine financial statements with her. He told her Vincent could handle the accounts. She had looked at him with a sadness he now understood.
“I need you to listen to me,” she'd said.
He hadn't.
The forensic accountant found suspicious transactions but urged caution. Missing documentation could indicate fraud, poor controls, or legitimate services recorded elsewhere. The proper inquiry would take time.
Adrian agreed. He no longer wanted dramatic accusations based on what people assumed he ought to believe.
Meanwhile, Hannah's lawyer negotiated the preservation of restaurant security footage and employee communications. Hannah could not afford an extended legal fight, but a local workers' rights organization helped her understand her options. She was more concerned with keeping Ben safe than receiving any settlement.
Adrian asked whether she'd be willing to speak with him again. She met him at a neutral café in daylight.
“I thought I understood my family,” he admitted.
Hannah stirred her tea. “Most people think they do.”
“I need to apologize for not being there that night.”
“You were there when she called for you.”
“Only after she'd learned to be afraid.”
Hannah studied him. “Then make sure the next time she needs you, she doesn't have to wait for someone else to find her.”
Adrian nodded. He did not ask her to forgive his absence or tell him he was a good father.

Before they parted, Hannah said quietly, “Lucia called me Mommy once. She was half asleep. I think she misses her more than anyone knows.”
Adrian looked out the window to hide his tears.
