The Truth About Elena

Chapter 16 - The Truth About Elena

Months after the restaurant incident, investigators informed Adrian that they had identified evidence supporting financial wrongdoing in several Moretti Freight accounts. The inquiry had also uncovered deliberate efforts to conceal documents Elena was gathering.

The cause of Elena's crash remained less certain. A newly recovered communication suggested someone intended to intercept her documents that night, but it did not conclusively establish who caused the collision. Adrian accepted that uncertainty, painful as it was.

Vincent eventually faced criminal charges relating to financial offenses and interference with evidence. He denied some allegations and challenged the prosecution's account. The legal process continued.

For Adrian, the most important change was that Vincent no longer had access to Lucia or control over her trust. Independent professionals oversaw the child's welfare arrangements, and Miriam ensured her financial interests were protected.

One evening Adrian told Lucia that people had found things Mommy wrote to help keep her safe.

“Did she know I'd miss her?” Lucia asked.

Adrian swallowed. “She knew you loved her. And she loved you very much.”

“Did Uncle Vince make her go away?”

He chose his words carefully. “People are still finding out what happened. What I know is that nothing you did caused Mommy to die.”

Lucia stared at him. Then she whispered, “He said I was bad.”

Adrian's eyes filled. “He was wrong.”

She leaned into him. They stayed together until her breathing slowed.

Later Adrian watched Elena's video again, but this time he did not focus on the financial records. He watched her face as she spoke about Lucia, the fierce tenderness in her eyes.

He understood that honoring Elena meant more than demanding punishment for anyone who harmed the family. It meant becoming the father she had believed he could be.
