What Justice Could and Couldn't Return

Chapter 19 - What Justice Could and Couldn't Return

The financial case against Vincent reached a resolution after lengthy proceedings. He accepted responsibility for certain transactions and obstruction-related conduct under an agreement reviewed by the court. Other disputed claims were resolved separately. The public record did not establish that he had caused Elena's fatal crash.

Adrian was disappointed by what remained unanswered. He had hoped every missing piece would fall into place. Miriam reminded him that legal accountability and emotional closure were not always identical.

He visited Elena's grave on the anniversary of her death. The cemetery was quiet, with sunlight filtering through maple leaves. He brought yellow flowers and a drawing Lucia had made of their family beneath a bright sun.

“I missed so much,” he whispered. “I didn't listen when you needed me.”

He stood for a long time, then added, “I'm listening now.”

At home, Hannah was helping Lucia assemble a cardboard birdhouse. Ben had completed his degree requirements and accepted an assistant teaching position. Teresa was setting the table.

Adrian stood in the doorway and watched them. The house wasn't perfect. It was noisier, less formal, and far more alive than it had been in years.

Hannah noticed him. “You've got paint on your sleeve already, and you haven't even helped.”

“Apparently this family has talents I don't understand.”

“Come find out,” she said.

He sat beside them and took a paintbrush.

That night he and Hannah talked on the porch. He told her he'd once believed revenge would end his grief. Instead the ordinary work of parenting, telling the truth, and making amends had changed him more than any courtroom result.

“I still get angry,” he admitted.

“Of course you do.”

“But I don't want anger to be what Lucia remembers about me.”

Hannah took his hand. “Then give her other things to remember.”

He looked at her, grateful not for a miracle cure or instant forgiveness but for someone willing to build a life one honest day at a time.
