The Birthday With No Rules

Chapter 18 - The Birthday With No Rules
Lucia turned five on a bright spring Saturday. Adrian offered to rent an amusement park. She asked for a backyard picnic and a cake shaped like a yellow bird.
There were balloons, sidewalk chalk, and a small group of children from her preschool. Teresa brought a homemade quilt. Ben helped arrange games. Hannah made the cake with an experienced baker after one disastrous practice attempt.
When the guests sang, Lucia became overwhelmed and covered her ears. Adrian immediately lowered his voice and asked whether she wanted the singing to stop. She nodded. Everyone stopped without making it a problem.
“Can I blow the candles now?” she asked.
“Of course,” Hannah answered.
Lucia leaned forward, took a deep breath, and extinguished all five at once. The children applauded. She laughed and clapped for herself.
Later, she spilled lemonade across the picnic table. Her smile disappeared for an instant. Adrian noticed, picked up a towel, and said, “Accidents happen.”
“I'm not in trouble?”
“No.”
She helped wipe the table, then ran off to chase bubbles. Hannah watched her go, remembering the terrified child beneath a restaurant table months earlier.
“She looks happy,” Hannah said.
Adrian followed her gaze. “She's learning she can be.”
He paused. “I am too.”
That evening Teresa apologized privately to Hannah for dismissing the child's distress. Hannah accepted the apology without pretending the past was erased.
When the party ended, Lucia climbed into Adrian's lap with frosting on her cheek.
“Daddy, will Hannah come back tomorrow?”
“If she wants to.”
Lucia looked at Hannah. “Do you want to?”
May you like
Hannah smiled. “I do.”
The little girl seemed satisfied. Then she curled against her father and fell asleep, trusting that the grown-ups around her would keep their promises.
