The Witness Who Would Not Disappear

Chapter 13 - The Witness Who Would Not Disappear

Mrs. Alvarez agreed to provide a statement. She described hearing Lucia crying behind the blue door, being instructed not to discuss Elena with the child, and receiving warnings that she would lose her job if she contacted Adrian directly.

Her account was painful, and she blamed herself for waiting. The investigator reminded her that truthful testimony mattered now, even if it came late.

Other employees began speaking. A driver recalled being told to take Lucia to the estate after a family dinner, despite Adrian expecting her home. A former tutor described how Lucia's behavior changed whenever Vincent entered a room.

Adrian listened to the summaries, fighting the urge to storm into Vincent's office. For years he had believed that men who commanded fear also commanded respect. Now he saw how fear distorted every account until the weakest person in the room stopped speaking.

Teresa visited him one evening. She looked smaller than he remembered, her silver hair loose around her face.

“I knew Vincent was strict,” she admitted. “I didn't know what was happening in that room.”

“Did you ever ask Lucia?”

“I thought I was protecting the family from scandal.”

Adrian looked at her. “You were protecting the adults from embarrassment.”

She sat down heavily. “You're right.”

It took him time to say the next words. “I want you in Lucia's life. But you need to accept that keeping the peace isn't more important than keeping her safe.”

Teresa nodded and cried.

At the next family dinner, she apologized to Lucia in age-appropriate terms for not noticing that she had been frightened. She did not demand a hug or forgiveness. Lucia stared at her for a moment, then offered her a crayon.

“Draw with me,” she said.

Teresa accepted. It was not absolution. It was a beginning.

Later, David called Adrian with troubling news: a witness had identified a car associated with one of Vincent's contractors near the road where Elena died. It was only a lead, but the investigators were examining it.

He had spent eighteen months grieving an accident. Now he faced the possibility that someone had concealed evidence about it.
