Chapter 15 - A Family Name on Trial

Public interest intensified when court filings revealed a dispute over the Moretti family business and Lucia's trust. Reporters gathered outside Adrian's office, asking whether Vincent had misused funds, whether the family was involved in criminal enterprises, and whether the brothers had become enemies.

Adrian refused to comment on his daughter's private experiences. His attorney issued factual updates about the corporate proceedings and confirmed that an independent audit was ongoing.

Vincent responded with indignation. He accused Adrian of using the courts to punish him for a personal disagreement. Yet his explanations changed when auditors compared them with banking records and authenticated messages.

The civil judge ordered preservation of documents and placed temporary limits on disputed financial authority. Separate investigators evaluated potential fraud and witness interference. No one declared victory. It was painstaking work, and Adrian accepted the pace because he now understood what had gone wrong when people treated power as proof.

At the café, Hannah watched part of a news segment while wiping tables. Her coworker asked whether she was the waitress mentioned in the reporting.

“I helped a scared child,” Hannah said. “That's all I'm prepared to say.”

That night she found a bouquet outside her apartment. There was no card. She called the building manager and had the hallway footage preserved before touching it. She had learned to take threats seriously without allowing fear to govern her days.

The flowers turned out to be from Ben, who had remembered her birthday. He laughed when she called to scold him for frightening her.

“Next time, sign the card,” she said.

“Next time, don't investigate your birthday present.”

She laughed until she cried.

When Adrian learned it was her birthday, he sent a simple message wishing her a good evening. He did not send jewelry or offer to take her away from her life. The restraint surprised her more than any expensive gift could have.

They were becoming friends, cautiously, without the pressure of expectations.
