The janitor’s name was Calvin Price.

He told me because he saw me reading the name stitched onto his uniform.

“You look like my grandma did when my uncle tried to put her out,” he said.

I almost smiled. “Was it that obvious?”

“Only to somebody who knows the face.”

He bought me coffee from the machine, though I told him not to spend money.

“Ma’am,” he said, “I have three dollars and a conscience. Let me use one of them.”

That kindness nearly broke me all over again.

Children can abandon you at dawn.

A stranger can buy you coffee at dusk.

Both facts can exist in the same day.
