Peter called Friday night.
I answered because Naomi suggested I stop avoiding and start documenting.
“Mom,” he said, “I didn’t know they took your phone battery.”
So that was how it happened.
I said nothing.
He rushed into the silence.
“Elaine said you’d call people and confuse things.”
“Who removed the battery?”
A pause.
“Martin.”
“Who handed me the dead phone?”
Another pause.
“Elaine.”
“And who drove the car away?”
He began crying.
I closed my eyes.
“Peter,” I said, “tears are not testimony. Send Mr. Lawson what you know.”
