Chapter 076 – Winter

Chapter 76 - Chapter 076 – Winter

Winter came early.

The first snow dusted the porch rail in November.

I stood by the window with coffee and watched the flakes settle on the yard where my children’s cars had once idled before dawn.

The house was quiet.

Not abandoned quiet.

Mine quiet.

I had changed the locks, the passwords, the emergency contacts, and the way I answered the phone.

I had not changed my heart entirely.

It still hurt.

It still reached sometimes toward the sound of old voices.

But hurt no longer ran the house.

That was progress.

I taped Calvin’s postcard beside the back door.

Still got the key?

May you like

Every morning, I answered it.

Yes.
