Martin recovered enough to point at the walls.
“Even if the will says that, the house is still part of the estate eventually.”
Mr. Lawson opened his folder.
“That depends on how long your mother lives and whether she chooses to change anything. At present, she owns it outright.”
Elaine said, “But Dad wanted it divided.”
“Dad wanted a lot of things,” I said quietly. “He also wanted you to call on Sundays.”
No one answered that.
Mr. Lawson placed a copy of the deed on the coffee table.
My name sat there in black ink.

Not guest.
Not burden.
