I almost let it go to voicemail.

“I know.”
A long pause.
“You really going to give the house to strangers?”
There it was.
Still the house.
Still ownership.
Still no question about the bench, the suitcase, the dead phone.
“Not strangers,” I said. “People who need protection.”
“We needed it too.”
“No, Martin. You needed money. You called that protection because it sounded better.”
He breathed hard.
Then hung up.
I did not cry.
