I looked at my oldest son.
My firstborn.
The baby who screamed through colic until I walked grooves into the bedroom floor. The boy who brought me dandelions and called them garden roses. The man who had just reduced my old age to a logistics problem before sunrise.
“No,” I said. “I am not punishing you for being tired.”
Martin opened his mouth.
I kept going.
“I am punishing you for deciding I was easier to move than respect.”
Elaine began crying.
Peter covered his face.
Martin looked shocked, as if he had not expected me to answer in language nobody else could soften for him.
Sheriff Reeves folded my letter.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said, “do you want them out of your house tonight?”
There are questions that divide a life.
Before them, you are still trying to keep everyone at the table.
After them, you understand some tables survive only because one person keeps bleeding quietly underneath.
