Chapter 007 – The Woman With The Red Scarf

Chapter 07 - Chapter 007 – The Woman With The Red Scarf
At three-thirty, a woman with a red scarf sat beside me.
She was maybe sixty, with sharp eyes and a paper cup of coffee in both hands. She looked at my suitcase, my grocery bag, the useless ticket, and the photograph in my lap.
Then she asked the only question that did not insult me.
“Did they leave you?”
I turned toward her.
Most people ask softer questions when they want permission to look away.
Are you waiting on someone?
Do you need help?
Are you lost?
This woman did not make me decorate the wound.
“Yes,” I said.
She nodded once.
“My sister did that to our mother. Nursing home lobby. Told the nurse she’d be right back with insurance cards.”
“Did she come back?”
“No.”
The answer opened something in me.
I had not cried when the car pulled away.
I had not cried when my phone stayed dead.

But when a stranger named the thing without making me soften it, tears slid down my face.
The woman handed me napkins and did not tell me to stop.
