Chapter 47 - Chapter 047 – The First Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.

That made it worse.

There was no distance between my children and me. No grand aisle wide enough for history. Just two tables, a judge, a clerk, and the strange public intimacy of family failure.

Martin wore a suit.

Elaine wore pearls.

Peter looked like he had slept in his shirt.

Judge Marian Cole had gray hair, square glasses, and the expression of a woman who had heard every version of “we were trying to help” and found none improved by repetition.

Mr. Lawson stood.

“Your Honor, Mrs. Carter is alive, competent, and was abandoned at a bus station by the respondents while they attempted to list her home for sale.”

Judge Cole looked at my children.

“Bold start,” she said.
