In July, I cleaned Henry’s workbench.

Not because it needed cleaning.

Because I needed proof that a life could be sorted without being thrown away.

I found old screws in coffee cans, a level with his initials, a note reminding him to fix the back gate in 2009, and a little wooden bird he had carved badly for Elaine when she was five.

I wondered if she remembered it.

Then I stopped wondering.

Memory cannot become another job I do for my children.

I placed the wooden bird on the kitchen windowsill.

It was ugly.
