Chapter 013 – The Condition

Chapter 13 - Chapter 013 – The Condition

The condition was simple in spirit and sharp in wording.

Any child who abandoned me, removed me from my home without informed consent, isolated me from communication, coerced property action, attempted to sell my house while I lived, or benefited from such conduct would lose inheritance rights under my will.

Mr. Lawson said every word mattered.

I said make the words matter enough to cut.

He looked at me over his glasses.

“You understand this may punish all three.”

I folded my hands in my lap.

“No,” I said. “It will identify them.”

He did not smile.

Good lawyers rarely smile when old mothers stop protecting grown children from themselves.

They just sharpen the paper.

Then he said one more thing.

May you like

“The house itself is already yours while you live. The clause protects what comes after. The deed protects what is now.”

That distinction saved me later.
