By dusk, the bus station lights buzzed overhead.

My legs hurt. My stomach was empty except for coffee and one packet of crackers Calvin found in the staff room.

The woman with the red scarf had boarded her bus to Cincinnati. Before she left, she squeezed my hand and said, “Don’t let them make you disappear.”

I kept repeating that sentence after she was gone.

Don’t let them make you disappear.

At seventy, disappearance can come dressed as concern.

A smaller room.

A safer place.

A bus ticket.

A bag of old clothes.

A child saying we can’t take care of you anymore while already calculating your square footage.
