Peter drove me to physical therapy in February.
He arrived ten minutes early and stayed in the car until I came out.
He did not knock.
That was progress in our family: a grown son respecting a porch.
The ride was quiet.
Halfway there, he said, “I keep remembering you at the station.”
“So do I.”
“I wanted to turn around.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
His hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“I don’t know how to make that right.”
I looked out at the winter fields, brown and honest under a pale sky.
“You do not make abandonment right,” I said. “You make the next choice honest.”
He swallowed.
“What is the honest choice now?”
“You stop asking me to make your guilt smaller.”
He nodded once.
That was enough for one ride.
At the clinic, he waited in the parking lot.
Not to be praised.
To be there when I came out.
