Martin had always been large in rooms.

Even as a boy, he filled silence with demands. His teachers called him a leader. I called him my hard child and loved him with extra patience because mothers often mistake extra patience for wisdom.

That night, his temper finally showed its true address.

“This is manipulation,” he said. “You planned this.”

“Yes,” I said.

That stopped him.

I lifted my chin.

“I planned not to be abandoned.”

His face reddened.

Peter whispered, “Martin, stop.”

Martin did not.

“You’re going to punish us for not wanting to wipe you down until you die?”

The room froze.
