Chapter 031 – The Order To Leave

Chapter 31 - Chapter 031 – The Order To Leave

My children stared at me.

Not because leaving surprised them.

Because my wanting it did.

Elaine said, “Mom.”

The word came out small, almost young.

I almost weakened.

Then I saw my suitcase by the door where Deputy Bell had placed it.

The torn zipper.

The grocery bag of old clothes.

The photograph still in my purse, all their child faces smiling up at a mother none of them had imagined would fight back.

“You left me at a bus station,” I said. “You can leave my house by the front door.”

Sheriff Reeves nodded toward the hall.

“Take only what you brought.”

Martin cursed.

The sheriff said, “Choose another word and we can do this with paperwork.”

Martin chose silence.
