When the cars were gone, the house felt enormous.
Deputy Bell stood in the kitchen while I found my spare phone charger. Mr. Lawson checked the back door. Sheriff Reeves walked through the house once, making sure no one had stayed behind.
It was humiliating.
It was also necessary.
Old pride is expensive. I could not afford it anymore.
At eleven-thirty, the sheriff changed my front-door code because Elaine knew the old one.
“Tomorrow we’ll get you a locksmith,” he said.
I nodded.
After they left, I stood in the foyer with my house key in my palm.
I had whispered at the station that I still had it.
