Elaine cried for twenty minutes on the porch.
Not loud enough to alarm neighbors.
Loud enough to pressure a mother.
“I was scared,” she said through the screen. “Martin said if we didn’t act, you’d sign everything over to some caregiver or scammer.”
“I had no caregiver except myself.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No, Elaine. I am done knowing what people mean when what they say is ugly.”
She wiped her face with a tissue.
“We were trying to keep the house in the family.”
“I am family.”
The sentence stopped her.
