Chapter 034 – The First Night Back

Chapter 34 - Chapter 034 – The First Night Back

I did not sleep in my bedroom that night.

I slept in Henry’s old recliner with every lamp on.

Not because I was afraid of ghosts.

Because I was afraid of headlights.

Every sound became one of my children returning. A branch against the window. The refrigerator motor. A truck on the next street.

At two in the morning, I walked to the kitchen and made tea.

My hands shook so badly I spilled water on the counter.

That was when the anger faded enough for grief to enter.

I sat at the table and cried for the children they had been.

May you like

Then I cried for the mother I had been.

Both were gone by dawn.
