Chapter 019 – Mr. Lawson Arrives

Chapter 19 - Chapter 019 – Mr. Lawson Arrives
Mr. Lawson arrived at the bus station wearing a wool coat over pajamas and the expression of a man who had expected disappointment but not cruelty before breakfast.
He knelt in front of my bench.
“Ruth,” he said.
That was all.
My name.
Spoken by someone who remembered I had one beyond Mom, burden, problem, and obstacle.
I began crying then. Quietly. Angrily. Into the napkins Calvin the janitor had given me.
Mr. Lawson sat beside me and opened his leather briefcase.
Inside were copies.
The deed.
The will.
The conditional inheritance clause.
A sealed letter addressed to Sheriff Daniel Reeves.
He did not tell me not to worry.
That would have been insulting.
Instead he said, “Your children made three mistakes.”
I wiped my face.
May you like
“What were they?”
“They left you with witnesses. They took your phone but not your name. And they forgot paper has a longer memory than guilt.”
