The fireproof box sat in my bedroom closet under winter blankets.
Inside were the deed, will, insurance papers, Henry’s death certificate, bank statements, and the first letter I had written to myself after Elaine tried to take my checkbook.

I had written that after signing a “temporary” authorization that gave Martin access to one account for bill paying.
He paid one bill.
Then transferred eight hundred dollars to himself and called it reimbursement for errands.
That was the beginning.
