Peter broke first.
He always had.
When the children were small, Elaine negotiated, Martin demanded, and Peter cried until someone did the hard thing for him.
He stood in the hallway holding his jacket and whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
I wanted to believe him.
Maybe part of him was sorry.
But sorry at the moment of consequence is not the same as sorry at dawn beside a bus bench.
“For what?” I asked.
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
That told me enough.
He was sorry I came back with the sheriff.
