Chapter 009 – The Realtor Sign

Chapter 09 - Chapter 009 – The Realtor Sign

Two weeks before they left me at the station, I found a realtor sign in my garage.

It was leaning behind the lawn chairs, wrapped in plastic.

**COMING SOON**

Those words have a particular cruelty when you are the one expected to be gone.

Elaine said the sign belonged to a friend.

Martin said I was snooping.

Peter said everyone was only trying to help.

Help had become their favorite word.

It meant taking my bank card to buy groceries and returning with steak I could not chew.

It meant changing my online passwords because “old people get scammed.”

It meant touring assisted-living homes and calling them lunch outings.

It meant removing choices one at a time until refusal looked like confusion.

I should have shouted when I saw the sign.

Instead, I folded the plastic back over it and made tea.

My generation was taught that anger makes women ugly.

That is one reason men get away with so much.
