I almost refused it.
Naomi said reading was not the same as forgiving.
So I opened it at the kitchen table with Mr. Lawson on speaker.
Elaine wrote that she loved me.
That she panicked.
That Martin pressured everyone.
That Peter was weak.
That the house had made them “lose sight of the person inside it.”
That sentence was nearly good.
Then came the old poison.
If you had been more realistic about needing care, none of this would have happened.
I folded the letter.
There it was.
An apology with a hook.
I put it in the file marked Elaine.
