I remembered Mr. Lawson’s office number because I had written it on every envelope in my fireproof box.
Deputy Bell called him from the station.
At first, she used the official voice.
Then her eyebrows changed.
“Yes, sir,” she said. “She is here with me now.”
A pause.
“Yes, sir. All three children.”
Another pause.
Her eyes found mine.
“I understand.”
When she hung up, she looked younger and more serious at the same time.
“Mr. Lawson is coming here,” she said.
“At this hour?”
“He said your children just triggered the clause.”
The bus station seemed to move around me.
