Under it, I placed a brass plaque Emily gave me for my birthday.

I laughed when I opened it.

Then I cried.

Still here had become more than survival.

It meant present.

Documented.

Believed.

Not waiting for a child to decide whether I could remain.

Sometimes I touched the frame before bed.

Not because keys are magic.
